Trails from White Bird

Florence, Gospel Humps

The ride to the historic ghost town and the site of Idaho's first Congressional seat is about 120 miles there and back from the White Bird Lodge.

Its mostly dirt roads with even a bit of paved road. Alternately, for more advanced riders, the vehicles can be towed to a half way point to ride an a moto/atv trail to the site.

Other destinations near here are Wind river bride or the gospel lakes.

Big Rock Canyon/Hells Canyon

From the lodge to the Big Rock Canyon abandoned homestead is about 25 miles with the last five offering rather difficult rock climbs to the actual homestead.

An easier route turns back before the difficult climb but offers the same epic views and includes a tour of the local pictographs.

This access to Hells Canyon is one of two that you can ride to in all Hells Canyon. There are tons of off shoot trails to explore.

Graves Point Lookout

This adventure from the lodge to the lookout is 18 miles. 36 round trip.

Its an easy ride along forest roads with views of Hells Canyon, the Salmon River Canyon and many mountain ranges. The last mile borders on intermediate but can be walked easily.

The lookout tower can be climbed with views full 360 degrees but the last mile is closed Sept 1 to June 15th.

Historic Kirkwood Ranch

This tour offers about 94 miles of riding with the last 5 milesbeing upper intermediate for motos. Thats a rocky five miles descent with the same back up.

The trail can be congested so this is limited to weekdays.

The historic Kirkwood Ranch is a museum now both outdoor and indoor. It was originally a sheep farm, than an official postal stop on the Snake River and can only be accessed by offroad vehicle or by boat.

Howards Camp

The trip from the lodge to the first vista and back is between 40 and 50 miles depending upon the route.

Sites include vistas of the Salmon River and Snake River canyons and a tour of the Joseph Plains Wilderness and the old school house.

Rice Creek

This is a shorter ride at about 35 miles and is mainly dirt roads.

Mainly the Salmon River Canyon is on display on this tour, but a trip to Boles can add another 20 miles and offer views of the Hells Canyon and the Joseph Plains Wilderness.

Fossil or Rock hounding

Take a tour of old White Bird and search for fossils or head up the Salmon in search of ruby garnets. After all, Idaho is the gem state.

Trails from the Selway Wilderness Camp

The MaGruder Corrider road is a famous road that uniquely runs through Congressional Wilderness. Its about 70 miles end to end, but our tours include riding about 40 miles of the trail to our private wilderness camp in the Selway.

The camp includes tents with wood floors and wood burning stoves and beds, a shower tent with a stove, a nearby hot spring, fishing, a dining facility, outhouses, a huge fire pit and loads of stars. From there we back track and explore the rest of the MaGruder trail to Paradise and back to camp.

Additional exploration offerings include a ride to Dixie and two single track trails, Lynx Creek and Elk Mountain near the camp. The single tracks are for advanced moto riders only.

The camp is a great spot to base camp from but is typically reachable in the last week of June or the first week of July.
